Breakdown

Familial love stretches across continents, oceans, time and film.

Plot Synopsis

Grandpa is sitting at his desk, nodding off a little. The room is warm, a fire burning quietly. Family photographs sit around, on shelves, on the desk, and a framed picture of a little girl is tipped towards the camera. He looks to be writing a letter, but the paper is empty. The moon is bright outside.

The paper transforms into a gnithon, a creature like a paper plane or a floaty tissue paper, and swirls around Grandpa and out the open window into the night air towards the Water Tower up the hill. He gazes after the gnithon and stands up from the desk.

Grandpa steps outside of his house and starts up the hill to the Tower. There is a garden and a chicken coop sitting next to the house, with early-spring daffodils and rhubarb sprouting, clusters of forsythia bushes dotting the edges of the property. A small horse chestnut tree lines the sidewalk up the street. The night sky is dotted with stars, a comet streaking in the sky just beyond the Water Tower.

He reaches the base, stone steps leading up to the “dragon-like tower”. He looks up at the sky to see the Milkman’s Comet ‘drag its glittering tail across the southeast sky’. As the comet hurtles forward through a cluster of stars, moonbeams are shaken out of the crescent moon by the force of the comet, and pour into the Little Dipper.

The grandpa looks around with despair as the Little Dipper begins to overflow, and moonbeams pool at the top of the Water Tower.

A fairy places wings on the back of his slippers, and he rises in two jumps to the top of the Tower. The fairy points urgently at the moonbeams, the comet beginning to disappear into the horizon. He stuffs his pockets full of moonbeams, until the fairy tugs his robe as storm clouds roll over. He leaps down, as it begins to pour, and just as his feet touch the ground, he bolts awake at his desk. Dawn is breaking, and the morning doves are singing. He begins to write, excitedly, a moonbeam glowing steadily next to the paper. His eyes meet the camera's, smiling.

Unsure about the opening bit, and needs a sound update. Might revisit the words and such, and gotta finish the credits.
